The EES has recently hosted two very successful book-launch events where renowned authors talked about their new publications which they then discussed (over glasses of wine) with members who were able to buy copies of the books at special discount prices and have them signed.
On Tuesday 24th April Andrew Robinson gave a fascinating, and beautifully-illustrated, talk in the Committee Room at Doughty Mews about his new biography of Champollion Cracking the Egyptian Code The Revolutionary Life of Jean-François Champollion published by Thames and Hudson www.thamesandhudson.com/9780500051719.html.

On Tuesday 1st May we held an event for the first time in the impressive Lecture Hall of the Swedenborg Society www.swedenborg.org.uk/ near the British Museum, where John Romer, in a very thought-provoking talk, gave an account of the influences and (sometimes mis-) conceptions which led to our current interpretations of the ‘history’ of ancient Egypt. The first volume of his own account: A History of Ancient Egypt from the first farmers to the Great Pyramid is published by Penguin on 3rd May: http://t.co/tJhGQudC

‘Bookshelf’ in Egyptian Archaeology 41 (Autumn 2012). will include reviews of both books; Peter Clayton will be reviewing Andrew Robinson’s and John Romer’s will be reviewed by Aidan Dodson.
The Society is very grateful to both Andrew and John for sharing their thoughts and insights with EES members and to Thames and Hudson and Penguin Books for enabling us to sell copies at a substantial discount at the events.
