At the Annual General Meeting to be held on 7th October, Dr Val Billingham, Anandh Owen, Dr Luigi Prada and Dr Alexandra Villing are required by the Society’s Articles of association to retire by rotation. In addition, Dr Alice Stevenson, who was appointed a trustee by the Board in May this year, is also required to retire. All five of these trustees offer themselves for re-election and their re-appointment is recommended by the Board.
Our Treasurer, Emma Duncalf, is expecting a baby in October and intends to retire from office as a trustee after the 2016/17 accounts are finalised. We are sorry to lose Emma but wish her all the best. This means that there will be an additional vacancy, which the Board would like to be filled by someone suitable to take over as treasurer. Details of this, and an invitation to members to apply for this post, are set out below. We are also advertising elsewhere.
Treasurer
The Treasurer’s role involves taking a lead in strategic planning and maintaining an overview of the Society’s financial affairs, to seek to ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained; in so doing the Treasurer works closely with the Business Manager, the Director and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The Treasurer chairs the Finance Committee and is an ex officio member of other committees, including the Fieldwork and Research Committee which acts as the Society’s Grants Committee.
The Treasurer must be or become a member of the Society; the appointment is for an initial period of three years renewable for a further three.
The ideal candidate will:
- Have a professional accounting or similarly relevant qualification and experience of working as a finance professional
- Be able to commit the requisite time (approximately 10 days a year in addition to 12 half days for Board and committee meetings)
- Have a good understanding of financial management and reporting, preferably in the non-profit or higher education fields
- Be an effective chair of meetings
- Have the coaching skills required to work with the Business Manager, Director and other staff to implement the Society’s Business Plan
- Have experience in establishing and/or setting out strategic goals in a business setting
- Have well-developed analytical skills
- Have experience in the NGO/charity sector either as an employee or a volunteer
- Have an interest in the history and culture of Egypt or other ancient civilisations.
This is a non-remunerated trustee post; as for all trustees, travel and other approved expenses will be paid.

Members' rights to nominate trustees
In addition, in accordance with Article 33 of the Society’s Articles, any member entitled to attend and vote at the AGM who wishes to propose another member as a trustee, to stand against any of those recommended by the Board or to fill any other vacancy, may give notice in writing to the Society no later than 28th July (70 days before the AGM). The notice must state the proposer’s intention to propose the appointment of another member as a trustee, give that member’s full name, address, and the other information that would be needed to be filed at Companies House on the appointment, and be signed both by the proposer and by the member to be proposed, to show his/her willingness to be appointed.
Details of any such nomination will be circulated to members with the notice of AGM.
