This year’s October Study Day will focus on Bryan Emery’s enigmatic quest to discover the tomb of Imhotep at Saqqara. The fabled tomb of the architect of the Step Pyramid of Djoser has led many to explore the sands of Saqqara, all without success. Despite not finding the tomb, Emery discovered many impressive monuments of the Early Dynastic Period and Old Kingdom skirting the desert plateau. As well as these already remarkable monuments, Emery’s greatest achievement at Saqqara was the discovery of the vast catacombs of the Sacred Animal Necropolis.
What better venue to hold discussion about this great period of exploration than the famous Carreras Cigarette Factory, now known as Greater London House? Only a ten minute walk from Euston station and easy tube access via Mornington Crescent, it is situated in an ideal location for everybody to get to and has commanding views over the green park outside. The two imposing Egyptian black cats will greet you and lead you through the magnificent Egyptianising temple façade through to our event venue.
Thanks to the generosity of the British Heart Foundation we will be using their meeting space in the building (signposting will be around on the day) to bring you presentations and movies of Emery’s work at north Saqqara during the 1960s and 70s.
