Would you like to work at the Egypt Exploration Society over summer? Want to explore our archives and work with a dedicated team to improve engagement and access with the materials?
Good news! This summer the Egypt Exploration Society will be taking on an intern to work for 10 weeks with the newly digitized Amarna object cards. They will be tasked with uploading the scans to the Society’s new online library and archive cataloguing system supplied by Soutron. They will work with transcriptions submitted by members of the Micro Pasts crowd-sourcing community, and catalogue the cards online making them accessible and searchable for researchers worldwide.
The cards document thousands of objects discovered from 1921 to 1936 by the EES teams excavating at Amarna. The object cards and some objects found at the site were discussed by Mary Chubb in her famous book Nefertiti Lived Here, and record details of the objects provenance, material, size, typology, and their subsequent distribution. They provide an invaluable record for students of Egyptology, museum curators, and of course the current team working there (Amarna Project), these cards will provide an essential resource for future research.
As well as cataloguing the object cards, the intern will also have the opportunity to participate in the Society’s forthcoming exhibition, Excavating Egypt, as part of the UK Festival of Archaeology. Creating exhibitions, organising events, and engaging with visitors will all form part of the skills development that this intern will acquire. The successful candidate will also be able to assist visiting researchers including our six Egyptian scholars who will be staying with us during August 2015.
