The Society is delighted to announce that it will, thanks to the generous support of the British Council, be awarding scholarships to three Egyptian nationals for the pursuit of their research in archaeology/Egyptology in the UK in 2014.
The awards will cover the costs of UK visa application, travel to and, where necessary, within, the UK, and accommodation and subsistence during a stay of one month. Travel and medical insurance will also be provided. The successful candidates will be accommodated in central London and based primarily at the headquarters of the Egypt Exploration Society (London WC1). We expect the scholarships to be taken up during autumn 2014 (precise dates to be confirmed).
The aim of the awards is to provide young Egyptian scholars with the opportunity to benefit from the Society’s extensive Egyptological library, archive and events programme, to visit the major UK collections of Egyptian objects, and to exchange ideas with EES staff and members, and others in the UK Egyptology community.
The scholars will undertake research on a specific theme during their stay, which may or may not be connected with any ongoing work they may be pursuing in Egypt. At the end of the visit the scholars will be required to provide a short presentation of 20 minutes to an audience in London, and a report of no more than 1,500 words (in English) on their work, to be published on the Society’s website. The presentations will be repeated for EES members at the British Council in Agouza, Cairo following the visit. We hope that the opportunity to present the research in both written and oral forms will also be of benefit to the scholars.
The scholars will be Egyptian nationals, and currently studying archaeology, Egyptology or a related subject at MA or PhD level, or within five years of the completion of their MA or PhD. One of the awards will be reserved for an employee of the Ministry of State for Antiquities; the others will be open to all. The successful candidates will have a good grasp of scholarly English in both spoken and written forms.
Applicants should provide a CV, letter of recommendation from a tutor or supervisor, and a short personal statement to include the following:
• A description of the proposed research topic (maximum 500 words)
• The reasons why 1) the candidate and 2) the research would benefit from the scholarship (maximum 500 words)
Applications and any enquiries should be sent by e-mail to the Society’s Fieldwork and Engagement Manager, Mr Essam Nagy (EES.Cairo@britishcouncil.org.eg, +20(2) 3300 1886). Interviews for shortlisted candidates will be held at the EES Office, The British Council, Agouza, Cairo in mid-June 2014.
Applications should be submitted no later than 2.00 pm on Thursday 29 May.
